While the game itself may not have garnered widespread popularity, the wave of current hybrid table games which follow the same structure and setup have Boston 5 Stud Poker to thank for setting the standard.

This page is intended as an introduction to the game of Boston 5 Stud Poker. Below you’ll find a rundown on the rules and gameplay, followed by a guide to finding tables, and a lesson on a strategy to help improve your overall odds.

Rules and How to Play

The game of Boston 5 Stud Poker is played under the typical table game setup, with up to six players ringing one side of a semicircular table, while a dealer runs things from the opposite side. A single standard 52 card deck of playing cards is used during each hand of Boston 5 Stud Poker, and the dealer will reshuffle the deck upon the conclusion of each hand.

Playing Boston 5 Card Stud

The objective of 5 card stud poker is to form a stronger five card poker hand than the dealer, according to the traditional poker hand rankings hierarchy. Each player will have their own betting area lined out on the felt, with various circles indicating the game’s three-part betting structure, and the optional side bet.

#1

Starting the Game

To begin each hand, players must place a mandatory ante bet in the “ANTE BONUS” circle, which is the left-most of the three betting circles. For the sake of this discussion, and because most tables institute this minimum, we will use a $5 wager for the Ante.

Along with the Ante, players must also place another wager known as the First wager. This bet must be equal to exactly double the amount of the ante bet, so we’ll be placing $10 on the “1st WAGER” circle.

#2

Optional Wager: Three Card Bonus

At this time, players can also choose to place an additional wager on the game’s three card bonus bet, which is labeled “OPTIONAL BONUS” in a separate betting circle above the three primary circles.

This optional bet pays out based on the strength of your first three cards, according to an escalating pay table which will be described in greater detail later in this section. Again, we will place a $5 chip on the three card bonus bet for the sake of our example hand.

*Note that this three card bonus bet cannot be made alone, and only players who have placed the Ante wager and the First wager can then opt to make the side bet.

#3

Receiving the First Three Cards

Once all players at the table have made their Ante bet, along with their optional side bet, the dealer will then distribute three cards face down to each player. The dealer also receives three cards face down at this time.

After examining your first three cards, any player who has placed the three card bonus bet AND holds one pair or higher should turn their cards over and show the dealer to claim their bonus payout.

#4

Three Card Bonus Payouts

The payouts awarded for winning three card bonus bets are set according to one of two primary pay tables, both of which can be reviewed below, with the adjusted payout between the two highlighted in bolded italics:

Three Card Bonus Bet Pay Table #1
HAND PAYOUT
Straight Flush 40 to 1
Three of a Kind 30 to 1
Straight 6 to 1
Flush 4 to 1
Pair 1 to 1
Three Card Bonus Bet Pay Table #2
HAND PAYOUT
Straight Flush 40 to 1
Three of a Kind 30 to 1
Straight 6 to 1
Flush 3 to 1
Pair 1 to 1

Aside from this stage in the game, though, turning your cards over is not permitted, and no other sharing of information between players is permitted.

#5

Raising or Folding

Once you’ve reviewed your first three cards, the game’s crucial decision point comes into play, as you may now decide between folding or raising. Should you elect to fold, you’ll forfeit both the Ante and the First wager.

When you raise, however, you’ll need to place a Second wager equal to exactly the amount of the First wager. In our case, we’ll be betting an additional $10 holding the Ac Kc Kh for a pair of kings already.

Some players with weaker holdings may elect to fold their cards.

#6

Five Card Hand

Once all player actions have been completed, the dealer will complete the hand by distributing two more cards face down to each player, along with two more cards for their own hand.

Now, each player hand will be compared to the dealer’s five card hand, and the following process will be applied:

  • When the player’s hand outranks the dealer’s hand, the player will receive an even money payout on their First and Second wagers while the Ante is returned as a push
  • When the dealer’s hand outranks the player’s hand, the house will claim the First and Second wagers, along with the Ante
  • When the player’s hand is ranked exactly the same as the dealer’s hand, the First and Second wagers, along with the Ante, will be returned as a push
#7

Ante Bonus Payouts

Finally, no matter whether you’ve beaten the dealer’s hand or lost, strong player hands are also paid out according to an Ante Bonus pay table. Once again, two primary versions of this pay table exist, and both can be reviewed below, with the adjusted payout highlighted in bolded italics:

Ante Bonus Pay Table #1
HAND PAYOUT
Royal Flush 1,000 x Ante
Straight Flush 200 x Ante
Four of a Kind 100 x Ante
Full House 25 x Ante
Flush 15 x Ante
Straight 10 x Ante
Three of a Kind 5 x Ante
Two Pair 2 x Ante
Ante Bonus Pay Table #2
HAND PAYOUT
Royal Flush 1,000 x Ante
Straight Flush 200 x Ante
Four of a Kind 100 x Ante
Full House 25 x Ante
Flush 15 x Ante
Straight 8 x Ante
Three of a Kind 5 x Ante
Two Pair 2 x Ante

At this point, with all losing bets claimed by the house and all winning bets paid out, the dealer will retrieve the cards, reshuffle the deck, and begin a new hand.

Boston 5 Card Stud Example Hand

#1
Let’s assume we’ve been dealt a single pair with our three card combination of Ac Kc Kh. In this case, you’d turn the hand over immediately and show the dealer, who would then pay you out at 1 to 1 on your $5 three card bonus bet for a $5 profit.
#2
Continuing with our example hand, let’s imagine we’ve been dealt the Kd and the 5h as the final two cards. This creates a final five card hand of Ac Kc Kh Kd 5h, good for three of a kind.
#3
The dealer turns over Qd Qc 4s 4h 2d for two pairs, a strong hand to be sure, but one which is bested by your three of a kind.
#4
With the winning hand, you’ll be paid out at even money on both of your $10 bets for First and Second wagers, good for a $10 profit on each, while the $5 Ante bet is returned as a push.
#5
Now, your hand will be compared to the Ante Bonus pay table, which shows a 5 x Ante payout for making three of a kind. In this case, we’ve bet $5 on the Ante, so the dealer would dispense a $25 chip as a bonus for making three of kind.

Best Places to Play Boston 5 Stud Poker

Rockingham Park Poker RoomThe world of hybrid table game design and development is cutthroat, to say the least, and every year dozens of new casino games are created and brought to market.

Unfortunately, the survival rate for these new additions is quite low, and for every successful entry like Three Card Poker and Let It Ride, countless other games have failed to catch on.

Boston 5 Stud Poker appears to have fallen into the latter category, as a thorough search of industry resources and casino table game menus turns up minimal results.

Brick-and-Mortar Casinos

Two casino properties located in New Hampshire currently run Boston 5 Stud Poker tables:

  • Rockingham Park Poker Room in Salem
  • Seabrook Poker Room in Seabrook

Additionally, this 5 card stud poker variant seems to be licensed for play in Colorado, New Jersey, Missouri, and Mississippi, but actual casino properties that currently run the game cannot be found at this time.

Online Casinos

As far as online casinos go, the game has yet to be adapted for play over the internet. But as is always the case when it comes to virtual gambling, the industry landscape is constantly shifting, and Boston 5 Stud Poker could eventually be added to the lineup of online table games at some point down the road.

Curiously, searches for the game return results pertaining to Boston 7 Stud Poker more often than not, and this close cousin to Boston 5 Stud Poker actually appears to be the more popular game in today’s casino climate.

Remember, though, the internet doesn’t know everything, and if you have a few local casino properties in your area (especially in one of the four states in that the game is approved for play), try calling and asking for the table games manager. Inquiring about the status of Boston 5 Stud Poker doesn’t cost you anything, and you very well may discover that a casino a few towns over or across the state line does indeed run the game.

Boston 5 Stud Poker Strategy

With a 5 card stud poker game like this, which is so intricately tied to traditional poker, it would appear as if the same strategic concerns which guide Stud and other variants would roll over to this new version.

After all, in poker players are rewarded for assessing their strength of their holding, weighing the odds, and making close calls correctly when it comes time to raise or fold.

Always Raise Strategy

5 Card Stud Poker StrategyIn the game of Boston 5 Stud Poker, however, the strategy for excelling and improving your odds is as simple as it gets: raise on every hand you play.

The reason for this approach, which would appear to be overkill considering you’ll be dealt inferior three card starting hands quite often, is actually easy to grasp: even with three bad cards to work with, you’ll lose more money in the long run by folding and sacrificing any chance to win.

When you fold, you forfeit both your Ante and your First wager, giving yourself no opportunity to catch a lucky pair of cards to complete your hand.

By raising on all three card hands, however, you can still defeat the dealer with just an ace high on many occasions, while landing any pair will entitle you to an Ante Bonus of twice your Ante bet.

Three Card Bonus Bet Strategy

When it comes to the three card bonus bet, the difference between the two primary pay tables is crucial. Should your Boston 5 Stud Poker table offer the 4 to 1 payout for flushes, rather than 3 to 1, feel free to splash around on the three card bonus bet.

The pay table offering 4 to 1 on flushes offers players a house edge of 2.32 percent on the three card bonus bet, which falls under acceptable parameters for player friendliness on side bets of this nature.

For the pay table offering 3 to 1 on flushes, the house edge on the three card bonus bet jumps up to 7.28 percent, placing the wager within the realm of “sucker” bets which should always be avoided.

Boston 5 Card Stud House Edge

Speaking of house edge comparisons, always look for Ante Bonus pay tables which offer 10 to 1 payouts when you make a straight, rather than the lower 8 to 1 payouts. Once again, the house edge is slightly better for players when the slightly higher payout is awarded (3.32 percent versus 3.48 percent).

By sticking to the more favorable house edge payouts, avoiding the 3 to 1 on flushes for the three card bonus bet, and raising on all hands, you’ll give yourself the most favorable odds possible for Boston 5 Stud Poker.
