There are plenty of casino employees that will be looking for new jobs, as the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City will be closing its doors by next month. With around 3,000 workers being left without employment, they have set their eyes on a different prize, the MGM National Harbor casino that is currently under construction but set to open its doors in December of this year.
Job Competition will be Fierce
Back in 2014, four casinos closed their doors in Atlantic City, leaving nearly 8,000 people without jobs, and now with the latest closure, another 3,000 will be added to that list. As New Jersey moves forward with their plans to expand and add additional casinos throughout the northern part of the state, it offers some hope for those currently unemployed. However, with those plans still being voted on, workers with plenty of casino experience are moving elsewhere to find their jobs.
With the upcoming opening of the $1.3 billion casino, MGM National Harbor, many of these same workers are making their way to Maryland, hoping to fill one of the open spots. James Murren, CEO of MGM Resorts International, has already made a statement about the high influx of workers looking for jobs at their casino,
“What we’re seeing happen is many of the dealers and employees are applying to work at National Harbor. We’ll probably have 60,000 applications for the 4,000 new jobs we’re adding in Maryland.”
Roughly 40 percent of the people applying for a job come from Prince George County, right where the casino is being built, with the rest coming from other areas of the state, as well as from outside its borders.
New Casinos Offers Great Opportunities for a Few
With only 4,000 jobs available, it will certainly be a fierce battle between those who have applied for the spots. However, this will allow the MGM property to seek out only the best of the best among those, giving them a great opportunity. The casino itself will be a landmark, as Murren believes it will be a destination resort and will bring in many tourists and visitors, stating that,
“MGM National Harbor will be the most profitable casino resort in the United States outside of Las Vegas.”
The mega-resort will offer:
- 308 hotel rooms
- 125,000-square-foot casino floor
- 3,000-seat theater
- Two lounges
- 18,000-square-feet of retail space
- 10 eateries and restaurants
- 25-square-foot convention center
- A spa
It will have plenty of room for those that drive in, with a 5,000-square-foot parking garage. With little time before the opening and the finishing touches to the property being made, it will come down to hiring the necessary staff to fill the casino; not a small feat to accomplish.
