Last night, the winning numbers of America’s biggest ever lottery jackpot were revealed. The Mega Millions winning ticket came from South Carolina, where one lucky player matched the right numbers to win the $1.537 billion jackpot.
Tuesday night, the drawing revealed the following numbers—5, 28, 62, 65 and 70 with the Mega Ball being a 5. A total of 36 tickets were sold matching five of the six numbers, earning second-prize tickets.
Who Is The Lucky Mega Millions Lottery Winner?
While the winner remains a mystery, we do know that the winning ticket was purchased at a KC Mart convenience store in the town of Simpsonville, a city of about 18,000 people near Greenville.
The winner has yet to come forward and has a total of 180 days to be able to claim the prize. And we may never know who the winner is. South Carolina is one of seven states where the winner can remain anonymous.
According to William Hogan Brown of the South Carolina Education Lottery, the board has created a policy where the winner is protected due to the risk of having that large amount of cash. The prize will equal around $878 million before taxes are paid with the one-time cash out option. The player can also choose to be paid in annuities over a 29-year period.
The Third-Largest Powerball Jackpot
While most attention has been on the Mega Millions lottery game, Powerball also has been soaring. The estimated prize for Powerball’s annuity option on Wednesday night’s drawing is $620 million, with a cash prize of $354.3 million, making it the third-largest jackpot.
